The ultimate luxury in life remains nature.

Writing is a habit, an addiction, as powerful and overmastering an urge as putting a bottle to your lips or a spike in your arm. Call it the impulse to make something out of nothing, call it an obsessive-compulsive disorder, call it logorrhea. Have you been in a bookstore lately? Have you seen what these authors are doing, the mountainous piles of the flakes of themselves they're leaving behind, like the neatly labeled jars of shit, piss, and toenail clippings one of John Barth's characters bequeathed to his wife, the ultimate expression of his deepest self?

Because this business of becoming conscious, of being a writer, is ultimately about asking yourself, How alive am I willing to be?

When this storm ultimately hits, it will take all that you have to survive and more likely than not, you'll be separated in its gales.

Ultimately, only what is to happen, happens. No amount of kicking around, resisting, fighting, fretting and fuming can change the design. So, simply, learn to understand, appreciate and accept this design. Learn to be unprovoked, undisturbed and unmoved. This is how you can be happy despite your circumstances.

And ultimately, if you have a worldview that can be undone with a novel, let me submit that the problem is not with the novel.

Rock bottom is somewhere none of us ever want to be, but sometimes it happens. It's a place that, if we allow it, can destroy us. On the other hand, it can teach us about the deepest, darkest parts of ourselves for our ultimate growth.

The ultimate source of comfort and peace is within ourselves.
