It's about throbbing calves and cramps at midnight that are strong enough to wake the dead. It's about getting out the door and running when the rest of the world is only dreaming about having the passion that you need to live each and every day with. It's about being on a lonely road and running like a champion even when there's not a single soul in sight to cheer you on. Running is all about having the desire to train and persevere until every fiber in your legs, mind, and heart is turned to steel. And when you've finally forged hard enough, you will have become the best runner you can be. And that's all that you can ask for.

People sometimes sneer at those who run every day, claiming they'll go to any length to live longer. But I don't think that's the reason most people run. Most runners run not because they want to live longer, but because they want to live life to the fullest. If you're going to while away the years, it's far better to live them with clear goals and fully alive than in a fog, and I believe running helps you do that. Exerting yourself to the fullest within your individual limits: that's the essence of running, and a metaphor for life-and for me, for writing as well. I believe many runners would agree.

Trust me my runners aren't going to run one event while looking past it to the second event. When they get on the line for the 10K that's a do-or-die situation for them.

A teacher is never too smart to learn from his pupils. But while runners differ basic principles never change. So it's a matter of fitting your current practices to fit the event and the individual. See what's good for you might not be worth a darn for the next guy.

So we come out to Los Angeles. And we met with every network. We met with show runners directors writers everything. And what we had an idea for they didn't like. And what they had an idea for we didn't like. So we went home.

I started running outside when I was at 'Biggest Loser.' Then I got runner's knee and thought I was never going to be able to shake it. When I overcame that and ran the L.A. Marathon it was such an amazing thing and now running is such a part of my routine.
