One night a friend lent me a book of short stories by Franz Kafka. I went back to the pension where I was staying and began to read The Metamorphosis. The first line almost knocked me off the bed. I was so surprised. The first line reads, "As Gregor Samsa awoke that morning from uneasy dreams, he found himself transformed in his bed into a gigantic insect. . . ." When I read the line I thought to myself that I didn't know anyone was allowed to write things like that. If I had known, I would have started writing a long time ago. So I immediately started writing short stories.

"All paradises, all utopias are designed by who is not there, by the people who are not allowed in.

"We die containing a richness of lovers and tribes, tastes we have swallowed, bodies we have plunged into and swum up as if rivers of wisdom, characters we have climbed into as if trees, fears we have hidden in as if caves.

A man gets older, he said, he finds they's lots of things he can do jest as well without and so he don't have to worry about this and that the way a young feller will. I worked near all my life and never had nothin. Seems like a old man'd be allowed his rest but then he comes to find they's things you have to do on account of nobody else wants to attend to em.

Flattery is like cologne water, to be smelt of, not swallowed.

What do we any of us have but our illusions? And what do we ask of others but that we be allowed to keep them?

Everyone's allowed to be in love with the wrong person at some point. In fact, it's a mistake not to be.

They have a richer, more abundant experience of life, and they love more deeply than most people can every imagine. They enjoy life, all of life.

They were men, and free. I was a woman, and a slave. And that's a chasm no amount of sentimental chit-chat about shared imprisonment should be allowed to obscure.

Today I hit rock bottom but didn't busy myself with activity to take my mind off it, like I usually do. I allowed myself to sink as deep as possible. It's like an infection: let it run its course and be done with it. Rising, I felt cleansed.

It is by people's choice that they accept Antichrist's deceptions rather than the truth of God, and now they are justly subjected to sifting and judgemental testing.

Yet this is the nature of suffering in this world. If God created Lucifer, then by implication He allowed suffering to thrive
